Where to stay in Monteverde? First a little about the area ......Monteverde Costa Rica is spread over a rural mountain slope. The local village of Santa Elena (6km from the Monteverde Reserve) is the main hub of activity in terms of commerce and transport (do not confuse Santa Elena village with the Santa Elena Cloud Forest which is about 7km from Santa Elena village). Hotels, cabins, bed & breakfasts, lodges and pensions that are located in Santa Elena village tend to be are less expensive and close to stores, restaurants and public transportation. Santa Elena also houses most services such as the bank, police, clinic and post office.
Cerro Plano and Monteverde are higher in elevation and closer to the Monteverde Reserve. Nearer the Monteverde Reserve hotel rooms tend to become a little more expensive.
