hotel in Monteverde Costa Rica. The Hotel Belmar
consists
of two buildings; the older
Chalet, built in 1984, and the newer main building. Both have impressive
views and
luxurious rooms.
For such an impressive hotel the prices are
very competitive when compared to the other top end hotels
in
town.
Set high on the Cerro Amigos (Friends' Hill, as named by the Quakers) the Hotel Belmar overlooks a sweeping vista of
the
province of Puntarenas and the Gulf of Nicoya in the Pacific Ocean. The hotel is set off the main road and boasts well
maintained grounds, private hiking trails, decent restaurant and a Jacuzzi.
The true jewel of Hotel Belmar is the covered Jacuzzi, built into the side of the mountain. This glass-enclosed hot tub
resembles a greenhouse and protects you from the elements. The view during the day is superb and the atmosphere is
romantic in the evening.
ROOMS - The Hotel Belmar has Comfortable Standard Rooms Located in the
Chalet Building and the Main Building.
CHALET ROOMS
The rooms at the Chalet are less expensive and a little smaller than the rooms in the Main building and either have one queen
or two queen beds - some have rooms facing the Gulf and the others the forest. Inside the Chalet, you will find an atmosphere
similar to a Victorian mansion. Plush couches line the sitting rooms. There is a television room and a bar.
MAIN BUILDING ROOMS
The rooms in the main building are a bit bigger and have either one king or two queen size beds and all have a balcony that has a
fabulous view of the Gulf of Nicoya and the hotel grounds. The Main building houses the restaurant, bar and main lobby.
MAIN BUILDING LOBBY AND RESTAURANT
As you approach the hotel you will note the impressive facades of
the chalet and hotel. Flowering gardens and hiking trails lead
up the steep
slope to the hotel's wood and stucco exterior. Rumor has it the owners pay to
sand and varnish the outside wood
every two years due to the extreme climate
here. This sounds like quite a task given the steep terrain, but the resulting
exteriors
are worth the effort.
The Hotel Belmar is very proud of their private trail; it takes a half hour to walk through a handsome patch of secondary rain
forest. Also, for the fitter hikers, there is a public trail to the top of Cerro Amigos. At the summit of this peak on the continental
divide, on a clear day, you can see a number of volcanoes, and a large expanse of the pacific low lands and ocean beyond.
